Shehu Belo
Shehu Belo is a self-taught artist whose work is rooted in memory, culture, and instinct. Raised in a richly traditional Nigerian household, moments of celebration were always marked by colour, energy, and the unmistakable presence of the gele. For Shehu, it wasn’t something to be overthought, it was simply part of the visual language of joy.
That instinct now defines his work. The gele, a sculptural headpiece often seen in his paintings, becomes more than an accessory; it’s a symbol of elegance, regality, identity, and cultural pride. “I love that beautiful part of my culture,” he says. “I see elegance, stature, beauty, it's all in there.”
Entirely self-taught, Shehu’s process is intuitive and immersive. “I just draw what I see, and adjust until I’m happy with it,” he explains. A philosophy that speaks to both discipline and freedom. Art, for him, isn’t a practice; it’s an extension of who he is. His influences are broad and unfiltered. If something captures his attention, he dives deep, drawing insight from across the creative spectrum. His work sits at the intersection of Realism, Abstract, Pop Art, and Surrealism, blending these styles into what he describes as a kind of “collaborative expression”. A layered approach that resists being confined to a single category.
Working primarily with acrylic, Shehu values the control it offers, while simultaneously pushing against its limitations. He is increasingly drawn to oil paints, excited by their unpredictability and the potential for unexpected beauty to emerge through the process. For him, the tension between control and spontaneity is where the work comes alive.
His pieces are predominantly figurative, anchored in the human form but elevated through stylistic fusion and cultural narrative. Each work carries echoes of heritage, identity, and emotion, often celebrating what he sees as the most innocent, precious, and joy-filled aspects of life.
Currently, Shehu is developing a cohesive body of work for exhibition, an evolving collection that merges his influences with his unmistakable voice, grounded in culture yet undeniably contemporary.
